Course Outline
This course is an extension of HLTAID011 Provide first aid. It equips graduates with the skills and knowledge to modify their approach if required to provide effective first aid to a person with a disability affecting their body systems and/or mobility, e.g. a person who is in a bed or wheelchair.
In many instances, the response to be provided to a person with a disability is the same as that provided to able-bodied persons, such as in the case of anaphylaxis or allergic reaction, for example. However, some first aid situations require the application of modified first response techniques, for example, responding to a person who is in a bed or wheelchair who is seizing or choking.
This course provides skills and knowledge to apply modified techniques where the first aid response differs between an able-body and a person with a disability. In addition, it includes the ability to recognise and report that a patient may be severely depressed or suicidal.
The outcomes are applicable to:
Disability Support Worker – Participants will learn first aid skills which could be used (if required) on clients they assist with a disability that affects body systems and/or mobility.
Community Nurse – The role of a Community Nurse involves assisting many different kinds of patients in different environments effectively and efficiently.
Personal Carer – Participants who are currently working or commencing work/duty as a personal carer will learn essential skills which can be used in an emergency with a client or family member who has a disability.
Aged Care Worker – Participants coming from or going into aged care work will gain practical, disability first aid skills which will improve the quality of care they provide and complement previous and ongoing training they receive in their position.
This course requires an online theoretical assessment that MUST be completed prior to a 4-hour practical component.

Assist a person having a seizure in a wheelchair.
Assist a person who is choking in a bed or wheelchair.
Recognise and assist a person with a disability in a mental health crisis.
Understand and initiate a personal evacuation plan.
Recognise and assist with Infection and Pressure sores.
Recognise and assist with Autonomic Dysreflexia.
Apply CPR in bed.

All face to face and online course material provided.
On successful completion of this course, students will be issued with a statement of attainment.
All courses are delivered by qualified trainers and assessors with relevant sector experience.
The face to face delivery will include an observation assessment.
The online theory component MUST be completed before the practical element is delivered.
